WE’RE GOING ON A BEAR HUNT, written by Michael Rosen and illustrated by Helen Oxenbury, is a wonderful book about a family who went out to search for a bear. Along the way they faced a handful of obstacles making their outdoor adventure a truly exciting one!
Our favorite part is the catchy repeating paragraph that goes “We can’t go over it. We can’t go under it. Oh no! We’ve got to go through it!” It makes my children laugh when we sort of sing it following the way the author himself does in this video. But I hope when my girls are older, they will appreciate the important lesson to be learned here. For me, it emphasizes the reality of having to face life’s difficulties and challenges head on, because often, there’s no way to go around them, no way to evade or escape them. We just have to go through them!
We love the endearing drawings, both in color and black-and-white, which depict beautiful landscapes, exciting scenery and a cozy home. They very well complement the delightful text of the story.
Another reason why we love this book is that we use this for yoga class; making reading come alive through movement! So many yoga poses can be incorporated in this story—downdog, updog, tree pose, twists! (See our little girl doing yoga in the video below.)
The many times we taped the pages and spine of our own copy, and the wrinkled edges, will tell you how much we enjoy reading this book! It’s a classic and definitely has its special place in every home with children!
Note for parent-teachers:
We can identify these character qualities in this story.
- DETERMINATION – purposing to accomplish right goals at the right time, regardless of the opposition
- ENDURANCE – the inward strength to withstand stress and do one’s best
- ENTHUSIASM – expressing joy in each task while giving it one’s best effort
(Definitions came from Achieving True Success, How to Build Character as a Family–a must-have book for all homes!)
